Setting Yourself Up For Success
Welcome back! First, I want you to pat yourself on the back and congratulate yourself on your hard work and commitment. You have accomplished a lot over the last handful of weeks and I hope you are feeling lighter and less tethered to those items that were not bringing you joy or lighting you up.
So now you've separated and sorted, but it's time to put your wardrobe back together. And you might be thinking, how do I integrate what I pulled out in with what is left in the closet? This is a great question, because what we want to focus on now, is how to keep your wardrobe (both hanging and folded) tidy, functional and consistent going forward. This requires putting a simple system or two in place.
For example, in my case, I am an incredibly visual person and love looking at a color coordinated/organized closet. I also like grouping my items together categorically, which means starting with my thinner, lighter clothing and moving towards my thicker, heavier clothing. This also touches on the concept of the order in which you will put on those pieces of clothing. For me, this is tanks to short sleeve tops to long sleeve shirts to cardigans/blazers. And because I want to also arrange by color, I start with tanks but arrange them lightest to darkest in color, then move onto short sleeve shirts and so on and so forth. I fold my jeans because I know myself and am not disciplined enough to hang them back up each time I wear them. I hang my cardigans, but fold my regular sweaters. I like to keep my coats and dresses together because I know I have a specific area in my closet that can accommodate longer hanging items. I can do this because of the way my closet is laid out, since there is plenty of shelving and hanging space.
I use my drawers for pajamas, workout clothing, as well as a majority of my accessories such as small bags, ballcaps, scarves, belts etc. And for sneakers, I keep them where I can see them, since I am reaching for them more often than my heels. Same goes for my boots - they are all lined up (color coordinated of course!) because I like to see what I have. But again, I want to reiterate, that this is simply how I do it and it's based off my personal preference and how my closet is designed/laid out.
As you reintroduce your newly sorted clothing into your existing closet, I challenge you to question your old ways of organization since maybe it wasn't serving you. And although it might feel a little odd to start color coordinating your shirts if you have never done that before, or begin hanging your jeans because you have always folded them, but the main goal here is to figure out what is going to work for you going forward, not what you have "always done," especially if it wasn't serving you or your closet!Welcome back!
