Welcome back!

By now, you should have completed the separation process, and what should be left are only those tried and true pieces that you can't live without. Next we are going to assess the rest of the items that are hanging in your closet, folded on shelves and inside drawers.

Those pieces will mostly likely fall under these categories:

  • Seasonal/special occasion

  • Unworn / tags still on

  • Ill-fitting items

  • Hand-me-downs

  • Unsure of the color

  • Stained or ripped pieces

  • Items that you simply just don't like! ;)

This next portion may feel overwhelming, but in a different way than before because now you have to make some hard decisions. But don't worry, I've got you! By using my storage bin system to sort, you can divide and conquer without feeling like you are immediately getting rid of everything you own. I want you to try and keep this process fun and light!

Ok, so you have already pulled out the pieces that you KNOW you want to keep, so no questions about those item, right? Remember this portion of the course is called SORT, not purge. ;) This means that you have the opportunity to sort through what is leftover without having to make any permanent decisions unless you feel called to do so.

We all have clothing that once we are "given the permission" to remove them from our closet for good, we have no problem doing so. It feels good, in fact! I am giving you that permission to release any guilt, shame, upset or any other negative emotion you might have around those items that are still hanging around, that someone gave you but you never worn, or that you bought on sale a while ago but still haven't ever worn it and now feel some shame around the "wasted" money you spent on it.

The list goes, on, but those are just a few examples. We have all been there, so know you are not alone! We can deep dive more into this when we have our 1:1 this week, but in the meantime, that is what the storage bin is for!

Remember you can always go back to the breathing technique I shared with you earlier in the course, and utilize the Pomodoro Method, which can help break things into smaller tasks and help with overwhelm.

Try not to overthink this next step of the process, because I want you to quickly go through things one by one and pay attention to your gut reaction when you encounter an item. If it is a "hell yes" keep it in the closet/drawer/shelf but if there is ANY hesitation then it goes into the bin.

Let's quickly clarify what I mean when I say hesitation:

A. You could feel hesitant because you might just not know how to wear it, but you love everything about it. In that case, keep it in your closet for now. Or maybe you just aren't sure how to wear it yet or haven't had a chance or opportunity to wear it yet, then that is an example of an item that can stay put.

B. You are simply unsure about the item, and although you love the color, it doesn't fit well, or vice versa. In this case, it probably needs to go, so take a photo if it, make a note about what you like or dislike about it and move on from it...for now. Remember you don't need to immediately purge the item, because that is what the storage bin is for - to hold the item for now, while you decide. This system allows you to have some separation from these items that are holding a certain type of energy, and in the meantime, it's out of sight, out of mind and you don't have look at it everyday, which allows the item to become more neutralized. You might just need some space from the items in your closet, so give yourself that and move forward with the steps.

BIN: This simply acts as a container for the items you are unsure of, not ready to part with, need to energetically part ways with for now until, need some neutrality from the item

POST-ITS/ADHESIVE NOTECARDs: Use these as a way to brain dump your feelings and emotions onto a single piece of paper that can live inside the bin with the items. That way, when you revisit it, you don't have to do a deep dive (unless you want to) because you will already get the cliff notes by quickly reading the notes associated with what is inside the bin. This helps you stay neutral about what is inside, especially if you are working on your skills of letting go of things that are no longer serving you.

Ok! All of that said, you can start with any portion of your closet that you want, but what we want is to really begin by getting eyes on what is left hanging, folded etc.

Good luck, have fun, and remember you have my support! I will be reaching out this week to set up our 1:1 to discuss your progress and anything else that comes up for you as go through this process!

Now go grab your plastic bins, notecards/post-its and pen, and get sorting!
